Dr. Guyon explains the search for Exoplanets
Dr. Olivier Guyon, Associate Astronomer/Associate Professor of Optical Sciences at The University of Arizona and project member of SCExAO (Subaru Cornoagraphic Extreme Adaptive Optics) and founder of Project PANOPTES (Panoptic Astronomical Networked Obervatories for a Public Transiting Exoplanets Survey) spoke to our club about his work designing telescopes and other astronomical instrumentation utilized in the search for exoplanets (planets outside our solar system).
When the size of Earth is considered relative to the Universe, it seems highly probable that life exists on other planets. Although that has yet to be determined, Dr. Guyon and his colleagues are working hard to find an answer. The means to that end are telescopes and cameras that are optimized to view and identify planets that may be difficult to find in the proximity of bright stars that may obscure them.
One benefit of improving technology and declining prices for technology, is the ability to make astronomy available to everyone. Dr. Guyon along with donor partners have been involved in outreach to school aged children and other interested individuals to build small telescopes using off the shelf components to explore the skies for exoplanets. These "citizen scientists" are also able to collaborate remotely and form project teams consisting of members from other countries.
