Guest Speaker September 16, 2020 -Yu Yok Perring
Today’s Vocational Program Speakers were Ka’iu Kimura and Yu Yok Perring from ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center. During the planning stages it was thought that tourism would generate the majority of its revenue. But since ‘Imiloa opened the revenue has come mostly from locals. Annually they have approximately 15,000 schoolchildren visit through field trips. Since COVID 19 they have shifted and partnered with the local schools to bring in programs. Traditionally their Revenue Streams had been sales, memberships, state, grants, and donations. Since the shutdown they have initiated some new programs such as ‘Imiloa@Home, Virtual Learning Program, and Halau Lamaku (Summer & Fall) which generated income and provided a place for children to go during the day. They created 5 learning pods with 9 students and one instructor and strictly followed COVID protocols inside and outside. All areas and supplies are thoroughly cleaned at the end of every day. Looking to the future, ‘Imiloa is researching what options are available to keep themselves viable and sustainable.
