  • Doing the Math -- We donated $3,700 to Polio Plus at our Installation and an additional $875 raised previously.  The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation was offering $2.00 for every dollar raised -- therefore because of RCHB, $14,725 will go towards Polio eradication.  It is estimated that each vaccine costs ~ $1.90 so therefore, we provided enough funds for 7,750 doses!  APPLAUSE PLEASE!!

Rice bagging project: -- Chris Okano and James Tyrin

To date, we have processed approximately 34,000 pounds of rice, resulting in over 6,800+ individual bags for families.  Doing the math -- my car weighs 2804 pounds -- we have rebagged the equivalent of 12+ cars!

Moving the location to Aunty Sally Luau Hale, on Thursday, July 2.  Big Mahalos to the folks who came out to bag:  James Tyrin and his son, Luke, Curt Sharp, Marlene Norton, John Gapp and friend, Mary Begier, Deborah Beaver, Jan Abundo, Dawn Pung, Art Taniguchi, Ken Barnes, Tim Hansen, Junichi Noumaru, Sharon Scheele, Chris Okano, Richard Cunningham, Mike Carroll, Chester Cabral, Brian Lindsey, Barbara Hastings, Steve Jacunski, and Lorraine Davis.

Post rice social, sponsored by Richard Cunningham was attended by Barbara Hastings, James Tyrin and son Luke, Tim Hansen, Mike Carroll, Art Taniguchi, Chester Cabral, Junichi Noumaru, Chris Okano, Brian and Lori Ann Lindsey and Lorraine Davis.

On July 7, 2020, members of RCHB met at the Hilo Daijingu to present Reverend Naoyuki Hotta and Stefan Cunliffe, a board members of Hilo Daijingu with a $1,000 donation to show our appreciation for the Hilo Daijingu allowing us the use of their commercial kitchen for our Rice Bagging Project.  Members in attendance along with (the members of the Hilo Daijingu were there) were Junichi Noumaru, Sharon Scheele, Chris Okano, and Lorraine Davis.  The Rotary clean up day still TBD.

Monthly Social -- James Tyrin

In person social, tentatively scheduled for July 23 at Cronies.  More information to follow.

District Grant Application -- Chester Cabral

Chester announced that there are two District Grants available, one is a match grant and the other a no match grant.  The match grant has been set aside for RYLA.  The no match grant RFP is available to non-profits to apply for and the application will be placed on the Rotary website.  If anyone has difficulty accessing the application, they can contact Chester or Lorraine and they can email the application out.  This year's amount is $576 and the due date for submitting the application is July 14, COB so the Board can review and select the recipient.

Lorraine urged the members to contact their favorite non-profit to let them know about the grant.  While the grant may be considered small, it is often the grant that allows a non-profit to provide a service or a resource that their restricted funding would not allow them to do.

District Foundation

District 5000 (Hawaii) Foundation meeting was held on June 27. The amendment of the Bylaws was approved. Election of the directors and board members will be made at the next meeting at 10 to 11 a.m. on August 1. One board member who will represent the Hawaii Island may be nominated among the member clubs on the island.

Recognitions

Our club received a donation of $489.96 from Higashihiroshima Rotary Club.
According to Mr. Masahiko Aratani, the past president of the club, it had made a monetary donation of about $500 every year for our club to fight against poverty of the locals for a few years since we established a sister club relationship about 20 years ago. Another reason for the donation was to show an appreciation to our mask donation to the club.
Our club put the donation to our general fund and will use it according to the said purpose.

Happy Dollar

Keep your happy dollar donation in an envelope and bring it to the next in-person meeting. You may contact Deborah Beaver to make a payment with your credit card or mail your check to the club. Thank you.
In addition, you may now pay from our new online payment system:

Alan O. was $15 happy.  He resigned from the Bay Clinic Board of Directors which has lightened his to do list considerably.  He was able to have an interesting experience in visiting Kalani Cone.  He claims that with the road conditions, if he had a bottle of cream with him at the beginning of the trip, he would have had butter when he reached Kalani Cone.  And finally, he made the prudent decision to cancel an Alaskan Fishing trip.

Marcia S. was $6 happy for the 6 years in Rotary.  She stated that is has been a great experience.

Marlene W. is $5 happy for her 5 years in Rotary.

Barbara H. is $5 happy for the Rice Bagging experience and the social at Richard C. Frame shop.

Art was $5 sad as he reflected on former member Calvin Shindo's passing.  He provided a brief history of Calvin's life and remembers him fondly.

Virginia and Bob J. are $5 happy to get lychee from one of the biggest lychee trees that is on their property and $5 sad because a neighbors pig wandered onto their property and died.  The animal is too big to move.  Mary B. jumped in and said that she knows a former Rotarian who specializes in large animal removal/disposal and will send the information to Virginia and Bob.

Junichi N. was $10 happy.  He echoed Barbara's sentiments about the rice bagging and welcomed Misaki to the meeting.

Miyuki L. was $10 happy for Misaki joining the meeting and hopes she will join our club.  Miyuki also announced that in preparation for her talk next week, she invited us to visit her at the Kinoole Farmer's Market on Saturday between 6 am and 11 am and she will give out complimentary coffee packets.  She asks that you bring a coffee mug, hot water, the packets and any addition you like to have in coffee (cream or sugar) with you to the meeting and she will demonstrate how the packet works and we can all enjoy a cup of coffee together.

Chester C. was $10 happy about the social at Richard C. Frame Shop.

Richard C. was happy, he brought 6 bottles of beer to the social and came back with 11 bottles of beer (not empties.)

Lorraine D. was $10 happy.  She enjoyed seeing folks in 3D at the rice bagging event and social.

Guest Speaker -- Mike Carroll, President Elect.

Mike maintains Club Runner attendance lists and discussed what constitutes a meeting, a make-up and also discussed the rule of 85.  If you have further questions, please contact Mike.
