Call to Order
PP Steven Sylvester called the June 17 meeting to order at 7:00. Twenty of the fifty eight members of the Rotary Club of Hilo Bay were in attendance.
Opening Activities
The meeting opened with Miyuki Lee leading the Pledge. Mike Carroll shared several inspirational messages from Ben Franklin:
- “Honesty is the best policy.”
- “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.”
- “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.”
- “He that can have patience can have what he will.”
- “ Lost time is never found again.”
- “Well done is better than well said.”
Trivia
The three questions deal with this month’s moto—fellowship. Chess, golf and reading are all fellowship groups in Rotary.

Club Announcements
PP Steven made quick work of them.
- Jan will become President Jan on July 1. Her installation will be at the Hilo Woman’s Club. Stay tuned for more information.
- Dues are due. Pay them now so that we don’t incur an unpaid expense of July 1.
- Lei making workshop will be held on 6/30 in advance PE Jan’s transition President Jan on July 1. Please sign up.
- Oktoberfest planning meeting will be on 6/24 at 5:30 pm. Beer and pupus. See or contact Steven or James for more information.
- The headcount for Jan’s installation must be completed by 6/19 to order the food.
Happy Dollars
$100 - Miyuki Lee - I came back from Japan after almost 3 months being there. My mom's heart surgery went well and she will be discharged this Friday.

Guest Speaker PP Steven asked Lisa Jacobs to come to the podium. Lisa drove over from Kona to introduce us HI Literacy—an adult literacy project. She resides on the west side of the island and is an organization of one with the main group located in Honolulu. Lisa would like to have a greater presence in and around Hilo and is looking for volunteers willing to be trained, which will probably taught on-line, to work with adults.
The training and the volunteering will be focused on real life learning. While many of her clients are trying to get a GED, it is the practical reading skills that they need to fill out forms, job applications, driver’s license, household issues and the court paperwork if they are referred from the Drug Court. The volunteers will meet with clients in a public space to tutor them. At the current time, HI Literacy has one or two volunteers available to work with clients.
In her spare time, Lisa drives a bookmobile which was donated from Honolulu. It is one the road several days a week in the Ocean View area.
