Meeting Notes of July 1, 2025
Call to Order: Tim Hansen, PP, called the meeting to order at 7am at the Woman’s Club of Hilo.
Pledge of Allegiance:
Guests: PDG Nancy Cabral, DG Benson Medina, ADG Connie Ichinose, Beverly Heikes, Doug Adams, Deb Lewis, Jen Tanouye. Guest of Jan Haraguichi-Abundo, soon to be President of RCHB: Leilehua Yuen, Kenny Chock-Daguio, Wendy & Alyah Botelho, Jeff Gray, Matha Rodillas, Mitchell & Karen Dodo and John Abundo.
Greetings by PDG Nancy Cabral and Tim Hansen.
Oli by Benson Medina: The ole was based upon Benson’s grandmother’s teachings to a young boy.
Presentation of Paul Harris Fellowship: PDG Nancy Cabral presented Kevin Reardon with his certificate. Kevin was also acknowledged at the RI Conference in Taipei before an audience of 39,000 Rotarians. Way to go Ken!
Recognition of the Board & Officers for 2025-2026: PP Tim Hansen called everyone forward and thanked them for a great year of service. Each Officer and Board member received a fortune cookie!
Swearing of the Jan Haraguichi-Abundo as President of the RCHB: Jan was called to the podium where she asked her new Board and Officers to come forward. DG Medina that swore in President Jan Haraguichi-Abundo and the new Board members and Directors.
Passing of the Gavel: PP Tim Hansen asked Alan Okinaka to explain the origin of the club gavel. He then asked the past presidents in attendance to come forward, arrange themselves in chronological order. As the gavel was passed from each past president they gave their year or years of service and passed it on. When it reached PP Tim, he presented it to P Jan Haraguichi-Abundo. Not to be out done, PP Tim crossed out his name badge and sat in the audience.
New President’s Remarks: P Jan outlined her year’s goals:
- Community connection and fellowship
- Continue to work with fellow Rotary Clubs, community service groups and schools.
- Continue to work with community groups on their projects—Liliuokalani Gardens restoration, Food Basket’s farming and kupuna projects and Salvation Army’s service projects.
- Fellowship and Growth
- Matching new members with older members for six months
- Monthly Pau Hana socials that include members unable to attend morning meetings
P. Jan offered the following inspiration to guide her in the 2026-2027 year.

Four Way Test: DGE Beverly Heikes led the Four Way Test.
Tejime: Art Taniguchi announced that we would do a traditional toast with saki and then led us in a traditional 3,3,3 1 clap.
A few remarks about the installation. Jan wanted to hold it some place other than the hotel and wanted a traditional Japanese breakfast. A team of very worthy volunteers worked to make her installation perfect. On Tuesday afternoon around 4 pm, they descended on the center and transformed it. Tables and chairs were rearranged, blue and yellow tablecloths were on the tables along with table decorations and flowers. Other brought in the dishes, silverware, chopsticks, water, et. At 6 am the next morning, the food began to arrive. Everything was in place by 6:30 and the space went back to normal by 9 am.
